2010 Laborshed Study

Bi-annually, our region commissions a survey from Iowa Workforce Development, designed to get a better understanding of the availability and willingness of current and prospective employees to change employment within the workforce, current and desired occupations, wages, hours worked, and distance willing to commute to work. The area or region from which an employment center draws its commuting workers is referred to as a Laborshed.

Quick Facts from the Most Recent Laborshed Report
  • Total labor force of 237,676 individuals
  • The average commute for those employed locally is approximately 26 miles
  • 2,403 Qualified workers commute to other communities for work
  • 37,748 have expressed a willingness to explore new employment opportunities

 

  • Of the employed workers who are willing to change employment:
    • 8.5% work multiple jobs and are seeking F/T employment
    • 65% have education & training beyond high school
    • 39.0% intend to pursue training & education within the next year
