2009 Laborshed Study

Bi-annually, our region conducts a survey designed to get a better understanding of underemployment, the availability and willingness of current and prospective employees to change employment within the workforce, current and desired occupations, wages, hours worked, and distance willing to commute to work. The area or region from which an employment center draws its commuting workers is referred to as a Laborshed.

Quick Facts
  • Total potential labor force of 232,458 individuals (entire Laborshed area)
  • 1,642 Qualified workers commute to other communities for work
  • 30,704 have expressed a willingness to accept new employment opportunities
  • Of the employed workers who are willing to change employment:
    • 12.3% work multiple jobs
    • 32.1% in professional, paraprofessional or technical occupations
    • 30.9% currently working in production, construction or material handling occupations
    • Willing to commute an average of 26 miles one way for employment opportunities
  • 17.9% of Laborshed respondents from the Clinton Region are currently working in the manufacturing industry
