The Greater Clinton Region offers a cost-effective, highly productive workforce that is receptive to various work environments and schedules. Our labor force has a long history of exemplary work ethic and keeping pace with technical advances in manufacturing and other industries.

Our Regional labor force is well educated with a range of skill sets and an eye towards innovation. More than 75% of those employed in our Laborshed have some level of education/training beyond high school—from trade and technical training to post-graduate degrees. The Region is home to a large population of professional, paraprofessional and technical staff (35%) as well as manufacturing and production employees (23%). Engineering talent is attracted by the dozen Fortune 500 companies that call our Region home.

2016 Laborshed Study

The CRDC commissions a bi-annual survey from the Iowa Workforce Development division of the Regional Research & Analysis Bureau designed to get a better understanding of the dynamics of our region’s workforce. The survey gathers a range of data, including the availability and willingness of current and prospective employees to change employment within the workforce, current and desired occupations, wages, hours worked, and distance willing to commute to work. The area or region from which an employment center draws its commuting workers is referred to as a Laborshed.

Facts from the Most Recent Laborshed Report:

  • Total labor force of 273,819 individuals
  • Average commute for those employed locally is approximately 11 miles
  • 2,790 qualified workers commute to other communities for work
  • 34,227 have expressed a willingness to explore new employment opportunities
  • Of the employed workers who are willing to change employment:
    • 12.9% work multiple jobs and are seeking full-time employment
    • 61.2% have education and training beyond high school
      • 22.4% have an undergraduate degree
      • 9% have a graduate, post-graduate, or professional degree
    • 28.4% intend to pursue additional training & education within the next year
